Frothing, Washing and Recipe Tips
  • Reduced fat milk (skim or 1%) produces a better froth than higher fat milk.
  • Lactose-reduced milk can also be used with excellent results. Soya milk can be whipped, but you may find that the froth is not as stable as dairy milk.
  • Warm milk froths better than cold milk, but scalded milk will not froth at all. Different microwaves work at different efficiencies, so if you find that your milk is not frothing after heating it, reduce the heating time.
  • In all of the recipes, sugar is optional. You can either exclude sugar, or use a sugar substitute.
  • If you wish, sprinkle a mixture of hot chocolate powder and cinnamon on top of specialty coffees. Since the frothed milk is warm, the powder will slightly melt.
  • Frothed skim milk tastes surprisingly creamy.
  • Keep the coiled whipper just below the surface of the liquid, and follow the surface of the froth up the glass with the coiled whipper. Remember, switch the Latte-Whip on and off while the coil is underneath the liquid.
  • Alkaline batteries yield a higher performance.
  • When frothing your beverage, use a small diameter, high-sided container.
  • Juices with a high, non-natural, sugar content (e.g. lemonade) will not froth as well as those with natural sugar (e.g. orange juice).
  • The Latte-Whip is not dishwasher-safe. Rinse the rod and beater head under the hot water tap. Remove the Latte-Whip from the running hot water and briefly turn on the Latte-Whip to spin it dry.

Cappuccino

    ¼ cup milk
As much coffee as will fit in your mug

Method

   1. Pour milk in your mug.
   2. Heat milk in your microwave for 10-15 seconds on high (if your mug is microwave safe).
   3. Froth milk with the Latte-Whip.
   4. Pour coffee directly into your mug.

To heat the frothed milk without using a microwave, drizzle the hot coffee in a zig-zag pattern through the frothed milk in your mug. This will heat up your froth and add a coffee-flavour as well.

If you enjoy sugar or sweetener in your cappuccino, you can either add it directly into your milk before you froth it, or add it into your cappuccino after it is made.

When you want a little extra flavour in my coffee, add one or two drops of vanilla extract or a teaspoon of flavoured syrup. Flavoured syrups can be purchased at most grocery stores and at specialty coffee shops.

For a cappuccino with a little zip, add a shot of your favourite liqueur directly into the coffee before pouring over the frothed milk.

Creamy Hot Chocolate

3 tablespoons of hot chocolate powder
    ½ cup milk
1 cup hot water or hot milk

Method

   1. Scoop hot chocolate powder into a generous-sized mug.
   2. Add milk (either cold or warm).
   3. Whip up the milk and chocolate powder into a thick chocolately foam. This will reduce the "chocolate sludge" which settles at the bottom of your mug.
   4. Drizzle freshly boiled hot water over the foamy mixture until the foam reaches the top of your mug.
   5. Lightly sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top of the foam.

For a doubly-smooth hot chocolate, substitute hot milk for hot water. Please DO NOT whip a full glass of hot liquid. Cold splashes are messy, but hot splashes can be dangerous.

Juice Smoothies

    ½ cup juice
    1 teaspoon egg whites
1 teaspoon sugar (or equivalent sweetener)

Method

   1. In a tall glass, add juice, egg whites and sugar.
   2. Whip using the Latte-Whip.
   3. Throw in ice cubes or ice chips.

Mochaccino (Chocolate Cappuccino)

    ¼ milk
Chocolate Syrup (Brown Cow or Nesquik)
As much coffee as will fit in your mug

Method

   1. Froth milk in your mug.
   2. In a separate cup, add coffee, chocolate syrup and sugar.
   3. Gently mix coffee-chocolate-sugar mixture with the Latte-Whip by pulsing the on/off button.
   4. Pour the coffee mixture into the frothed milk.
   5. Pour the frothy coffee from mug to cup to mug in order to blend the coffee and chocolate flavours with the frothed milk.
   6. Sprinkle hot chocolate powder or cinnamon on top of the frothed milk.

Low-fat Chocolate or Strawberry Milkshakes

    ½ cup milk
1 tablespoon Chocolate or Strawberry syrup

Method

   1. Pour cold milk into a tall glass.
   2. Froth milk using the Latte-Whip.
   3. Add chocolate or strawberry syrup.
   4. Quickly whip the syrup through the frothed milk.

If you are watching your caloric intake, this concoction makes a nice, low-fat treat. The froth is thick enough to eat with a spoon -- whip it up, spoon it out and enjoy!

Instant Cappuccino (quick and delicious!)

    ¼ milk
    1 teaspoon instant coffee
    Sugar or sweetener to taste

Method

   1. Add milk, instant coffee and sugar to your mug.
   2. Whip up all ingredients directly in your mug.
   3. Slowly drizzle boiled water through the froth in a zig-zag pattern (to heat up the milk and leach the coffee out of the froth).
   4. Sprinkle a mixture of hot chocolate powder and cinnamon on top of the frothed milk.

The result will be sweetened coffee in the bottom of your mug with a sweet, coffee-flavoured milk froth on top. Perfect in the morning in your travel mug! For large travel mugs, add more instant coffee granules.

Ice Cappuccino

    ¼ milk
    ½ teaspoon instant coffee
    Sugar or sweetener to taste

Method

   1. Add cold milk, instant coffee and sugar in a tall glass.
   2. Whip up mixture with the Latte-Whip.
   3. Throw in ice cubes or ice chips.

Make sure to add the ice after you froth your ice cappuccino. The Latte-Whip has not been designed to crush ice.

Brown Cow, Adult-Style

    ½ cup cold milk
    1 shot of Kahlua

Method

   1. Pour cold milk into a tall glass.
   2. Froth milk using the Latte-Whip.
   3. Add Kahlua.
   4. Quickly whip Kahlua into the frothed milk.

Frangelico Froth

    ½ cold milk
    1 shot of Frangelico

Method

   1. Pour cold milk into a tall glass.
   2. Froth milk using the Latte-Whip.
   3. Add Kahlua.
   4. Mix Frangelico liqueur into the frothed milk with the Latte-Whip.

Frangelico has a soft nutty flavour and is less "syrupy" than other liqueurs in the same category. Frangelico is a popular favourite, but other liqueurs can be used as well.

Piña Colada

    ½ cup pineapple juice
    Coconut syrup
1 teaspoon sugar (or equivalent sweetener)
    1 shot of light rum

Method

   1. In a tall glass, add pineapple juice, coconut syrup, egg whites and sugar.
   2. Whip using the Latte-Whip
   3. Add rum.
   4. Quickly whip the rum through the frothed milk.
   5. Throw in ice cubes or ice chips.

Espuma de España (Spanish Froth)

    ¼ red wine
    ½ teaspoon egg white
    ½ teaspoon sugar

Method

   1. Add red wine, egg white and sugar to a clear glass.
   2. Whip using the Latte-Whip.

This is a lovely recipe that can be served at dinner parties as a "before-dinner drink", and the froth is so stiff that it can to eaten with a spoon. Whip the red wine directly in the wine glasses to save time! Do try to use red wine glasses (rather than white wine glasses) because red wine glasses are designed with a slight inward contour at the top.

Vinaigrette Salad Dressing

    ½ cup olive oil
    ½ balsamic vinegar
½ teaspoon Dijon mustard (which basically amounts to a little squirt)
    Dash of oregano
    Dash of dillweed

Method

   1. Add all ingredients into a tall glass.
   2. Whip using the Latte-Whip.

This vinaigrette will stay emulsified for about one to two hours. Without whipping, the oil and vinegar will quickly separate, leaving you with the age-old problem of trying to mix the flavours by shaking the decanter immediately before pouring.

Sweet Vinaigrette

    ½ cup olive oil
    ¼ lemon juice
    1 teaspoon honey

Method

   1. Add all ingredients into a tall glass.
   2. Whip using the Latte-Whip.

This sweet dressing is lovely on bitter lettuces (i.e. endive) and mesclun lettuces. The Latte-Whip fits nicely into smaller decanters with tight necks for individual portions. By preparing the dressing directly in the decanter, you effectively decrease the number of dirty dishes.
